Game sound not working? Follow the audio path.

If a game looks normal but sounds silent, start by finding how far the sound is getting. A single muted game is different from a computer that cannot play any audio. Keep the volume low while testing so a sudden recovery is comfortable.

1. Check inside the game

Look for the game’s speaker, music or effects controls. Some games keep music and sound effects separate. If a Play or Start button is visible, click it before testing. Do not restart an active round without checking whether you can save it.

2. Compare another trusted sound source

Play a familiar audio source on the same device. If it also stays silent, focus on the selected output and system volume. If it works, focus on the game or its browser tab. This comparison narrows the problem; it does not prove a driver is broken.

3. Check where sound is being sent

On Windows, open the sound output selection from the taskbar’s sound controls. Confirm that the selected device is the speaker or headset you intend to use, rather than a monitor or a disconnected headset. Check the device’s own power and volume controls, too.

4. Check browser and app volume

Review whether the game’s browser tab or site is muted. In Windows Sound settings, use the volume mixer to check the game or browser’s individual level and output choice. Leave the game running while inspecting these controls if you can do so safely.

5. Re-test after one change

Close and reopen the affected game after saving progress, then repeat the same sound test. If all applications are still silent, follow Microsoft’s audio diagnostic steps for your Windows version. If only one game is affected, collect its name, version and exact symptoms for the publisher.

Do not install “driver updater” tools from pop-ups. For device-specific drivers, use Windows Update or the genuine computer or audio-device manufacturer’s support resources.

Common questions

Why can I hear another app but not the game?

The game, browser site or per-app volume may have a different setting. Compare those controls before changing system drivers.

Should I turn the volume to maximum to test?

No. Use a comfortable low level because sound can return suddenly after a setting changes.
